VIP Matola

Most Malawians either walk or if they are lucky ride a bike to get from one destination to the next. In some cases they barter for rides in matola's. Typically a matola is a pickup truck or van circa 1990. In most cases the occupancy of these "cabs" exceed the legal passenger limit by double. No seatbelt laws here, you better just hang on! The van we rode in from Lilongwe to Lake Malawi and then to Zomba provided each one of us our own seat and air conditioning, therfore we called it the VIP matola.

In keeping up with traffic we got a speeding ticket, radar caught us doing 91km in a 50 zone; came to about a $30 fine. It was kind of amusing seeing the police with the radar gun in conjunction with the family of goats running every which way through the streets.

Check out the following clip as we drive from Lilongwe headed SE to Lake Malawi.
